Mahunag Mahunag means the great (maha) snake i.e. the sheshnag of Hindu mythology, the great friend of lord Krishna. We have innumerable tales and temples dedicated to the great snake in this state of Himachal so much so that the shimla district is divided into upper mahasu and lower mahasu. “Mahashiva”, the great lord Shiva, became “mahasu” in the local dialect, which besides being the lord of snakes has his permanent abode in the white and pure Himalayas. About 11kms. From shimla bus stand lies a beautiful temple of mahunang in the most enchanting surroundings. About 2kms. From Tara Devi toward shogi on shimla-kalka highway is a bifurcation, on your right hand side, leading to itbp camp where lies small pond of fresh water with floating swans. Going down hill the dirt road leads just short of the temple of mahunag.

KUFRI Famous for its ski-slopes kufri is 16kms. From shimla with a small bazar.it offers pony-rides and a fantastic view of shali peak and the snow clad mountains. The main charm of kufri is during the winters after the snowfall when one can go skiing and sledge-ride. It must be mentioned that here the slopes are not safe for beginners. On the way, beyond Dhalli, comes Charabra famous for wild flower hall. As this has been taken over by a private Institution entry to the place is no longer allowed. Still charabra has another beautiful spot viz.the helipad just behind the school himalyan international D.P.S. this commands a very panoramic view of the Himalayas in the north, with a glimpse of river satluj deep down in the valley and the shivalik hills to the south. One can also sight the lights of panchkula and chandigharh from this point on a clear night. At kufri indira holiday home of HPTDC has a restaurant and a bar with a min-zoo. Approachable by bus/car.

 

CHAIL With a dream-view of shimla the towenship of chali was eastablished by the maharaja of patiala after his entry to shimla was banned by the British.to avenge himself and at the same time not to lose sight of his beloved town, maharaja selected chail where he not only built a most beautiful place but also built a unque Cricket ground,the highest in the world, to tease the British. It is a partb of Cricket history that once the maharaja invited the team of the MCC of England, got them drunk at night and became the winner defeating the sloppy team next morning. The cricket ground is now under the charge of the Ministry of defence it is about (50 kms) from shimlavia kufri and (59 nine kms) via kandaghat It can be apporoached by taxi/car/bus. Chail can also be reached via junga by the dirt-road or by trekking.
 

TATTAPANI 55kms. From shimla tattapani Hot Water lies on the banks of the ferocios but holy river satluj,which has its source in the holiest of holy Mansarovar lake,now in chine. Besides being the fastest river of India it is known for its dangerous depths. It is not safe to take a dip or attempt to swim in these unpredictable water. Tattapani is famous for natural hot-sulphur springs where people can take a healthy dip in the man-made tank. Besides river-rafting during summers one can visit the Goofa of the manylingams of lord shiva, about 2 kms. From the main bazar. Tattapani is very picturesque area, especially during the full moon.

NARKANDA A skiiers paradise during winters, with an ideal ski-slope for the beginners,Narkanda (kanda means meadow in local parlance)is 65 kms from shimla .it is famousfor its highly tall and striaight alpine trees called maroo which enthrall you against the backdrop of the white himalayas. For an adventure enthusiast and a camper narkanda offers an unforgettably exiting 3kms touch uphill trek though huge pine trees to the hatu peak,named after the wish-fulfilling hateshwari mata temple. This peak commands one of the most majestic views of almost the entire greater Himalayan Range,including Dhauladhar-kinnar kailash,badrinath-kedarnath range,on one side and the plains of Chandigarh and U.P on the other.just about a km from the temple lies an enchanting forest area with a beautiful meadow (kanda) stretched out dreamily infront. All this can be covered in a day by an experienced trekker whom must carry sufficient quantity of healthy food,fruits,water,ready made tea in a thermos or a backpack.

FAGU 22kms. From shimla (6kms.from kufri) on the national highway lies a small and beautiful hamlet popularly known as Fagu. Approachable by car/taxi fagu is the gateway to the tribal belt of kinnaur and lahaul & spiti, to the breathtaking beauties of pabbar and chanchal valleys and lush green hills of khara pathar and meadows of giriganga. It is truly a fragrant door to the Wonderland of delicious and colorful apples of Himachal pradesh.on a clear day the majesticity of choor Dhar peak and the greater Himalayan rang fromfagu cannot be described in mere words and hence, is knownas a painter, s delight. On rainy day the traveller can lose himself in the dense mists the fog of fagu which befall you from all sides.An unforgettable experience, indeed. and short treks to tungesh, cheog (5kms.)Where exits a sanskrit collage and a temple on top of a densely forest, herbal-hall and a shorter trek to Deshumata temple (1 1/2kms.)From GALU can be part of your memorable itinerary
 

 

Shimla Region - Situated at a height of 7200ft. shimla the main town consists of a circular road known a cart road, Gang Bazaar, Lower Bazar, Middle Bazaar, Mall Road, the Ridge Maidan and lakkar bazaar .In its suburbs lie small township called Summer hill,Boileaugang,chotta shimla,sanjauli, to name a few. New shimla has also recently come up housing many government and private offices besides residential colonies.
Toy train - One of the biggest marvels of engineering skills, with its unique and innumerable bridges and tunnels, is the narrow –gauge railway track built from kalka to shimla. This toy -train Was started in the year 1903 and was pulled by powerful steam engines which have now been replaced with more powerful diesel ones. Covering a distance of about 85 kms in 5-½ hrs, it slowly winds its way up and reaches shimla howling through 103 tunnels and dense pine forests. A couple of these reverberating tunnels are more than a kilometer long. A must for every visiting traveler a ride in this joyful “toy-train” is a memorable experience
Tara Devi temple A trekkers paradise taradevi temple is situated on the top of the hill with a most panoramic view of shimla and the white Himalayan range on one side and on a clear day, the plains of chandigarh on the other. Goddess Tara, a prominent deity of Tibetan Buddhism, is one of the nine sisters of goddess durga. In order to reach the temple one must reach Taradevi township either by car/taxi or by train from where the 3kms. Trek starts uphill to the temple. A motor able road starts from about 9kms. From shogi on little known shoghi-shimla by-pass to a 4kms.steep climb up to the temple. On the way back one may trek down to the lord Shiva temple amidst an apple orchard and gurgling fresh water spring. Coming back on the main highway do visit temple Sankatmochn of lord hanuman especially during the evening when Shimla, decked in the myriad sparkling lights, affirms itself verily as the “queen of hills”. You are advised to go with packed lunch and drinking water.
NALDEHRA 22kms. From shimla lies the beautiful one of the highest, saucer-shaped 9 hole golf courses.it is one of the most picturesque picnic spot surrounded by dense deodar forest. HP tourism offers luxurious cottage accomodation with restaurant and bar. Like in kufri, one can enjoy the pony-ride in the forest.an ideal place approachable by bus/car/taxi only.
